Traits for transport: Alien wetland plants gain an advantage during endozoochorous seed dispersal by waterfowl

چکیده

Abstract The expansion of alien plant species is global concern, yet our understanding their dispersal mechanisms limited. Here we address the potential seeds to disperse via ingestion, transport and egestion in waterfowl (endozoochory). Based on general rapid expansions, expected have several advantages for endozoochory compared native species. We hypothesised that would higher passage rate, longer gut retention times, germinability after shorter time‐to‐germination by waterfowl. In order test hypotheses, endozoochorous ability six pairs congeneric wetland a feeding experiment with mallards ( Anas platyrhynchos ). focused differences seed survival, time, time‐to‐germination. analyses corrected shape volume as these traits are known important effects. With passage, had rates germinated slower, whereas times greater germinability. Controlling did not alter conclusions, but affected all aspects process. This suggests may particular correlated potential. Among control seeds, faster was than natives. Seed explained seeds. Seeds correlate successful endozoochory. provide competitive advantage over ensuring new environments, potentially enabling expansions. Our study underlines role species, notably through influence time germination.

Endozoochorous seed dispersal of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands

During last two decades studies on endozoochorous seed dispersal indicated that a large numbers of plant seeds are potentially dispersed and suceefully germinated via animal dung. However, very little is known about the relative importance of endozoochory in germination success of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content, seed deposition p...

Endozoochorous dispersal of aquatic plants: does seed gut passage affect plant performance?

The ingestion of seeds by vertebrates can affect the germinability and/or germination rate of seeds. It is, however, unclear if an earlier germination as a result of ingestion affects later plant performance. For sago pondweed, Potamogeton pectinatus, the effects of seed ingestion by ducks on both germinability and germination rate have been previously reported from laboratory experiments. We p...

Wetland seed dispersal by white-tailed deer in a large freshwater wetland complex

Mechanisms of long-distance dispersal are important in establishing and maintaining plant populations in isolated wetland habitats. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) have been cited as long-distance dispersers of both native and exotic plant species in North America; however, knowledge regarding their influence in wetlands is limited. Given traditional classification methods for seed d...
